Garbage truck kills woman in 'Aiea

An 84-year-old 'Aiea woman was struck and killed by a city garbage truck yesterday as she rushed across the street to dump her trash, police said.

The accident happened at 6:15 a.m. fronting 99-077 Ieie Place near Mikalemi Street.

Police said the woman had extra trash she wanted to dump but the truck had already finished picking up the woman's rubbish. The woman rushed from her house and went behind the garbage truck to dump rubbish in her neighbor's trash can, police said.

The truck's driver, 29, didn't see her. He hit the woman as he was backing out of Ieie Place, a dead-end street. Police said the woman suffered massive head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:45 a.m.

The woman's name was not available yesterday.

Honolulu officer hurt in accident

A 32-year-old Honolulu police officer was injured yesterday in a motorcycle accident at the department's training facility in Waipahu.

The officer was thrown from his motorcycle, which landed on top of him, about 9:40 a.m., paramedics said. The officer, who complained of shoulder and chest pain, was taken in stable condition to the Queen's Medical Center for treatment, paramedics said.

Kailua-Kona drowning victim identified

A 42-year-old man who apparently drowned Wednesday in Kailua Bay has been identified as John Center of Holualoa, police said.

Police and fire units yesterday responded to a 9:57 a.m. report of a body floating in the water.

Police said bystanders brought Center's body to shore and performed cardio-pulmonary resuscitation until fire department rescuers took over.

Center was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:43 a.m.
