Back-to-school madness returning to our roads

There you are, crawling in traffic. The radio's blaring inane comments, the air conditioner's on the blink, exhaust fumes fill the car and your blood pressure is rising as you realize you're going to be late for work.

Welcome to the back-to-school craziness. What to do?

Well, you could continue in your solitary commuting and continue to contribute to the mess. Or this year you might try one of the alternatives — buses, car pools, van pools, bicycling or walking.

But if you must drive, please leave a more-than-generous amount of time to complete your commute. You don't want to be in a big hurry when you're almost certain to encounter closed lanes or exit ramps on your route.

And please drive patiently around our children who are on their way to school. Especially with the significant shortage of paid crossing guards reported in The Honolulu Advertiser yesterday, too much haste can lead to tragedy.
