Lava road sparks safety warning
PAHOA, Hawai'i Increased traffic because of a new viewing area for the Kilauea Volcano lava flow in lower Puna has drawn a safety warning from Big Isle police.
Maj. David Kawauchi said an estimated 400 more cars a day are now using Highway 130 from Hilo to Kalapana to access the lava flow, creating further stress on the narrow, congested commuter route.
The highway has been the site of several fatal and serious accidents that have closed the road for hours at a time. There is no alternate route.
