Castle High School to celebrate 50th

Castle High School will mark its 50th anniversary in a big way, with a dinner, a concert by alumni entertainers and a dance, 5 p.m. Sept. 8 on the Kane'ohe campus.

Former Knights and their families are invited to the festivities and to reflect on the golden anniversary.

"This is a once-in-a-lifetime event, so we want everyone to come," said Hank Iida, Class of '53, who is co-chairman of the celebration. "We're creating a family and community affair, so everybody's welcome."

Said the other co-chairman, Sam Kakazu Jr., Class of '76: "This special evening is a great way to share our memories and support the quality of education for children in Kane'ohe."

A dinner begins at 5 p.m. in the school cafeteria; a concert on the football field follows, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. with Castle grads performing. The roster includes Teresa Bright, Jesse Rivera, Kawika Kahiapo, 3D (Dwight Kanae, Kawika Kahiapo, Del Beazley) and Justin Kalawaia. A dance follows, till midnight, in the school gym, with music by the Castle Jazz Band.

The celebration is sponsored by the Castle Alumni & Community Association, which supports all Castle complex schools. Organizers hope to raise $25,000 for the 10 Windward schools, including Castle, King Intermediate, 'Ahuimanu, Benjamin Parker, He'eia, Kahalu'u, Kane'ohe, Kapunahala, Pu'ohala and Waiahole Elementary.

 •  Dinner: $10 (choice of steak or chicken) for adults, $5 (spaghetti) for children; prices will be $14 and $7 at the door. Dance: $5 in advance, $7.50 at the door. Reservations and information: Hank Iida at 247-4241 or Sam Kakazu Jr. at 233-5600.
In addition, each of Castle's 50 graduating classes, from 1952 through 2001, will be encouraged to help raise $500 apiece; funds raised will be matched by a grant from the Harold K.L. Castle Foundation.

There is an advance sale discount, if space is reserved by Aug. 31; the organizers are also selling benefit T-shirts with pre-party pickups scheduled.
