Man hospitalized after mugging
A 71-year-old Waipahu man was in serious condition at the Queen's Medical Center yesterday after he was mugged near his home Sunday night, police said.
According to police, the attack happened at 11:30 p.m. in front of 94-245 Leowahine St. The man's son told police that his father got off the bus on Farrington Highway and walked a short distance toward home.
The father said an assailant hit him in the face and stole his wallet and backpack, his son told police.
The father suffered head injuries and possible internal bleeding, police said. He was able to walk home.
Strip club patron uses fake bills
Police arrested a 23-year-old man after he allegedly passed counterfeit money to enter a Halekauwila Street strip club Sunday night.
According to police, the man and a friend went to Exotic Nights about 10 p.m. and paid the $20 cover charge with a counterfeit $50.
The man then tried to pass a counterfeit $20, but it was rejected by a waitress. The waitress then checked with the cashier to see how the suspect paid to enter and found the counterfeit $50 in the register.
The man was arrested on suspicion of first-degree forgery. His friend left before police arrived. Police said they searched the man and found more counterfeit $20 bills.
Man caught after escaping police
A 43-year-old man who authorities said escaped from the Wai'anae police station Friday was arrested Sunday, police said.
According to police, the man was arrested on suspicion of domestic abuse and a court warrant. After he was taken to the Wai'anae station about 8:45 p.m., he asked for a drink of water.
When he got to the water fountain, he ran through the front door of the station and down the street. Officers were unable to find him that evening.
On Sunday, officers saw him in the Wai'anae area, but the man ran again. He was caught, after a brief struggle, in front of 87-084B Farrington Highway and arrested on suspicion of second-degree escape.
Bail set for mental hospital escapee
A 49-year-old patient at the Hawai'i State Hospital in Kane'ohe who surrendered less than an hour after escaping Friday has been charged with second-degree escape and first-degree criminal property damage.
Bail for Edwin Neves was set at $50,000. Police said Neves became violent with hospital staff members around 4:15 p.m. While running away, he threw items at pursuing staff members and threatened them with a piece of lumber. Neves also kicked in the window of a car driven by hospital security.
He ran into a gulch covered with dense brush but walked back to the hospital about 45 minutes later.
Man accused in bus stop stabbing
Police charged a 42-year-old man in connection with the stabbing of a 39-year-old man at a Chinatown bus stop Aug. 16.
Eugene Dawson was charged with second-degree attempted murder, and his bail was set at $100,000.
Police said the 39-year-old man was confronted at 12:30 a.m. at a bus stop fronting 100 N. Beretania St. He tried to defend himself with a broom, but was stabbed in the back before the assailant ran away.
The victim was treated at the Queen's Medical Center and released.
