Something to smile about on summer day

There was more than enough tragedy, struggle and grim economic news in the paper over the past few days to make anyone feel glum. But mixed in there was a sprinkling of stories that gave us a smile and a legitimate puff of pride.

Two examples:

• The O'ahu Canefires, our home-grown Babe Ruth baseball champs, flew back to town after winning the Babe Ruth World Series in Hamilton, N.J., with a six-game sweep against some of the best youth baseball teams in the nation.

• Back home, about 100 volunteers teamed up with the city, Kalihi community leaders and the environmental group Protect the Planet, to spend Saturday in a massive cleanup and trash removal at Kalihi Stream.

So, give yourself a pat on the back, Hawai'i. Whether it was competing with (and beating) the best on the other side of the country or cleaning and polishing in your own backyard, you did good.
