LEEWARD

Kamaile goal: 25 books each

Kamaile Elementary School in Wai'anae will kick off its reader campaign with an assembly at 12:30 p.m. tomorrow in the cafeteria.

The theme for the campaign is "Catch the Wave, Dive Into Reading." The goal is to have every student read 25 books.

Parents and other family members are invited.

Leeward lifeguards will speak to the students about the importance of reading.


EAST HONOLULU

Schools invite parents tonight

Three East Honolulu elementary schools will hold open houses tonight for parents and students.

'Aina Haina's open house starts at 6:30 p.m. at the school cafeteria with introductions and then moves to the classrooms from 7 to 8 p.m. .

Koko Head's open house starts at 7 p.m., also at the cafeteria, for introduction of teachers and Friends of Koko Head board members. Classroom visits begin at 7:30 p.m.

At Kamiloiki Elementary School, the open house is split over two days starting at 7 tonight and tomorrow night. Tonight is for parents of children in kindergarten through Grade 3; tomorrow for Grade 4 through 6. Classroom visits begin at 7:30 p.m.


WINDWARD

Power lost for 40 minutes

A power failure left thousands of Windward O‘ahu and North Shore residents in the dark last night.

The failure began at 7:45 p.m. and affected 6,000 customers from Waialua to Kahuku and Hau‘ula, said Hawaiian Electric Co. spokesman Fred Kobashikawa. The power was restored at 8:24 last night. The cause was under investigation.


Tour of marsh limited to 15

A cultural and natural tour of Kawai Nui Marsh's archaeological and ecological sites will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday beginning at the Windward YMCA.

Ric Guinter will lead the tour and discuss the history of the Kailua Ahupua'a and Kawai Nui Marsh.

The tour is sponsored by the Kawai Nui Heritage Foundation and 'Ahahui Malama I Ka Lokahi.

A donation of $5 from nonmembers and $3 from members will be accepted. The group will be limited to 15 people.

Road briefing set for tonight

Improvements to Kalaniana'ole Highway from Olomana Golf Course to Waimanalo Beach Park will be discussed at a community meeting at 7 tonight at the Waimanalo Elementary and Intermediate School Library conference room.

The state Department of Transportation will provide information about the project and solicit comments.


CENTRAL

Two H-1 lanes to be closed

Two eastbound lanes of the H-1 Freeway between the Kunia Bridge and the Waikele Stream Bridge will be closed from 6:30 p.m. to 4 a.m. through tomorrow while crews install pavement markings and striping, according to the state Department of Transportation.
