Kona rustlers using arrows on cattle

KAILUA, Hawai'i — Kona police are investigating several apparent attempts at cattle rustling in the Kaloko-mauka area.

Over the past two months, ranchers discovered that a number of cattle had suffered severe wounds from being shot with arrows, police said. The arrows, still lodged in the animals, were found when the cattle were taken to slaughter.

To reach the animals, the rustlers trespassed on private property by way of Kaloko Drive, police said.

Body at old hotel in Hilo identified

HILO, Hawai'i — Police have identified a man whose body was found Friday at the former Hilo Hotel as Craig Okamoto, 46, who had no permanent address.

An autopsy did not reveal the cause of death and further tests are being done. Police have tentatively classified the case as a coroner's inquest.


Visitor drowns at Hapuna Beach

HAPUNA, Hawai'i — A 35-year-old visitor from Colorado apparently drowned Monday while snorkeling in waters off the north end of Hapuna Beach.

Police identified the man as Jose Luis Jimenez-Boroquez of Denver.

Fire Department rescue workers were summoned at 5:37 p.m. and the victim was taken to the North Hawai'i Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about an hour later.


Big Island police nab drunk drivers

Big Island police said they made 17 arrests for drunken driving during the week of Aug. 20-26, bringing drunken-driving arrests to 517 this year, down from 814 at the same time last year.

There have been 20 traffic deaths on the Big Island this year, compared with 26 at the same point last year, police said.
