Isle File
NCAA honor for former UH soccer star

Advertiser Staff

Former University of Hawai'i women's soccer player Camille Kalama has been named the state's 2001 NCAA Woman of the Year.

The annual award honors college seniors who have exhibited outstanding service and leadership, academic achievement and athletic excellence.

Kalama, a three-year letter winner, earned second-team all-Western Athletic Conference honors last season, and was named to the conference's all-academic team three straight years.

Kalama, a University Regents scholar out of Kamehameha Schools, captained the Wahine her junior and senior seasons.

Ten finalists will be selected next month from among 51 winners nationwide, and the 2001 NCAA Woman of the Year will be chosen from that group. All the state winners will be honored at an awards dinner in Indianapolis on Oct. 21.

HIGH SCHOOLS

• Moanalua change: Richard Pagan has been replaced as head boys basketball coach at Moanalua High by Byron Cheng, athletic director Dana Dias announced.

Pagan had been with the Moanalua program nine years and was head coach the last three.

Pagan's first team was unbeaten in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Western Division in 1999, but did not make it to the state tournament. His total OIA record was 22-11, including 5-5 last season.

Pagan said he was notified July 25 that he would not be rehired and had "no comment" on the situation.

Dias said, "We felt we wanted to go in a new direction in the boys basketball program."

This is Cheng's first varsity boys assignment. He was volunteer administrative assistant for the UH Wahine the past two years.

Cheng, 34, previously was girls coach three years at Sacred Hearts, where he teaches math. He coached three years at Punahou, finishing third in the state in 1995 as interim coach.

Dias also appointed Geri Mehrtens coach of the boys bowling team and Yuki Lileikis coach of the cheerleading/pep squad.

KAYAKING

• Colin fourth: Kailua's Kathy Colin, a 2000 Olympian, captured the U.S. team's highest finish at the 2001 Sprint World Championships — and barely missed a medal — finishing fourth Monday in the K-2 1000 meters in Poland.

Colin teamed with Ruth Nortje from New Jersey for just the third time. They also paddled in the K-2 500 meters, taking eighth.

Three-time Olympian Peter Newton, who grew up in Hawai'i and now lives in Washington, finished ninth in the K-4 500 B final.
