Maui league moves football games

Advertiser Staff

This weekend's Maui Interscholastic League junior varsity and varsity football games have been moved from War Memorial Stadium to King Kekaulike, the Maui mayor's office and the league announced yesterday.

St. Anthony will travel to King Kekaulike tomorrow for a 4:30 p.m. junior varsity game and a 7:30 varsity game. On Saturday, Lahainaluna will play Baldwin at 4 p.m. (JV) and 7 p.m. (varsity).

The games were moved to preserve War Memorial's field for the Sept. 8 University of Hawai'i-Montana football game, according to a press release from the Maui County public information office.

Previously, only the games scheduled for this weekend were moved from War Memorial to King Kekaulike, the only other site where admission may be charged for MIL football.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL

• Wong, Metzger win: Hawai'i's Kevin Wong and Stein Metzger won their first match yesterday at the Goodwill Games in Brisbane, Australia, when one of their Canadian opponents withdrew in pain.

John Child was unable to continue because of excruciating pain from an eight-week-old hernia. He was teamed with Mark Heese.

Wong and Metzer, seeded fourth in the Games, were leading 14-9 in the first game. They will play fifth-seeded Emmanuel Para and Rego Ferreira Saturday.

On Sunday, Wong and Metzger — former Punahou School and UCLA teammates — won the Manhattan Beach Open in California, which Metzger said is "the Wimbledon of beach volleyball."
