Ma'ili pipes require repair

Board of Water Supply crews were repairing a break yesterday in a 12-inch water main on Farrington Highway between Maliona and Maipela streets in Ma'ili.

The break occurred just before 1 p.m. and affected water service to four customers, according to the BWS.

The work closed one lane of Farrington and was expected to continue until late last night or early today.

Firm proposing Ma'ili landfill

A proposal for a landfill in Ma'ili will be discussed at the Wai'anae Coast Neighborhood Board meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Wai'anae Neighborhood Community Center.

Sphere LLC wants to create a landfill for construction and demolition material at the old Kaiser Cement quarry off Pa'akea Road.

Sphere representative Bernie Kim was listed on last month's board agenda to give a presentation on the project, but canceled because the company believed its presentation three years ago fulfilled its requirement for a public hearing.

The board subsequently asked Kim to return and update the community on its plans.

The company last month sent a letter to about 100 Ma'ili residents and board members saying it had recently completed purchase of the property at the proposed landfill site and is seeking city and state permits to move the project forward.

Residents have objected to the project saying narrow Hakimo Road is too dangerous to handle large trucks heading to the dump and the Leeward Coast already has the only two landfills on O'ahu — the city's Waimanalo Gulch Sanitary Landfill near Ko Olina, and PVT Landfill, a private operation for construction and demolition debris on Lualualei Road.

Telethon offers entertainment

The Muscular Dystrophy Association's Labor Day Telethon Leeward satellite site will operate from 5 p.m. Sunday to 5 p.m. Monday at the Kapolei Shopping Center.

Free entertainment by local bands and hula groups will be featured in the parking lot fronting Kentucky Fried Chicken. Bring beach chairs, mats and coolers, but alcohol is not allowed.

Group seeks volunteers

Volunteers are needed for a cleanup of Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve and Kalaniana'ole Highway from Keahole Street to Blow Hole, on Sept. 15.

The cleanup is sponsored by the nonprofit group Friends of Hanauma Bay and is part of the statewide Get The Drift and Bag It program.

Volunteers will meet in the preserve's upper picnic area adjacent to the parking lot, where they will be provided work assignments and garbage bags. Residents are reminded to bring a photo ID to avoid the beach access fee.

To volunteer, just show up.

For more information about the cleanup, call coordinator Harvey Shapiro at 395-1217.

Goodies await some sober drivers

You can get a ticket if you drive drunk this weekend, but you may get a watermelon if you're sober.

Police will begin setting up checkpoints today to catch drinking drivers over the Labor Day weekend.

Sober drivers will be rewarded at one special checkpoint on Sunday with free watermelons and other treats, courtesy of police and Mothers Against Drunk Driving-Hawaii.

Roadblocks will be set up at unannounced times and locations starting today.

The surprise checkpoint on Sunday will reward drivers who are sober, wearing a seatbelt and carrying a valid driver's license, vehicle registration and no-fault insurance card.

The watermelons and bottles of Island Fresh Water are compliments of MADD, Foodland Supermarkets and an anonymous donor.
