Advertiser Staff

More than 300 crews from around the world are expected to participate in the Queen Lili'uokalani Long Distance Canoe Races this weekend at Kailua, Kona.

Races for traditional six-person canoes will be held tomorrow. Approximately 130 women's teams and 175 men's teams are registered.

The women's course runs 18 miles from Kailua Bay to Honaunau. The men's course travels back from Honaunau to Kailua Bay.

Both defending champions are entered: Kai 'Opua women and Team New Zealand/Hawai'i men.

Races for one-person, two-person and 12-person canoes are scheduled for Sunday, along a 5 1/2-mile course from Kailua Bay to Keauhou.

• Clay in 12th: Hawai'i's Bryan Clay finished the first day of the decathlon at the World University Games in 12th place with 3969 points, despite the fastest 100 meter time and second-best long jump in the field.

Clay posted marks of 10.63 in the 100 (945 points), 24-4.5 in the long jump (918), 43-10.75 in the shot put (690), 6-1.25 (679) in the high jump and 51.71 (737) in the 400.

SURFING

Former world champ Derek Ho and Hans Hedemann are in the masters division (ages 35-43). Jeff Hakman, Michael Ho, Buzzy Kerbox and Bobby Owens are competing in the grand masters division (44-older). Michael Ho is the defending grand masters champion.

SOCCER

• Hawai'i Ducks: Nicole Garbin, who five months ago led Maui's Baldwin High to its second straight state high school girls soccer championship, will be in the starting lineup for the University of Oregon when the Ducks open their season today against Gonzaga in Eugene, Ore.

Garbin was the Hawai'i high school Player of the Year the past two years.

Senior Starr Johnson, a Punahou graduate from Kailua, will start at defender. She is a three-year letterwinner and returning starter.
