Quilt display among highlights of World AIDS Day

Advertiser Staff

World AIDS Day dawns today with exhibits that feature portions of the Names Project quilts showing statewide.

Music on Maui, a health fair on Kaua'i and various memorial services are planned, and several commemorative events take place on O'ahu.

Six panels from the Names Project quilt will be unveiled at St. Pius X Church in Manoa, where an ecumenical memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. The six 12-foot-square quilts will be on display from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., one in the church and five in the parish hall (one moves from the University of Hawai'i-Manoa campus, one from Kapi'olani Community College).

Pat Pa'akaula, the co-chair of Names Project Hawaii, said she'll also show several videos in the parish hall, including the quilt documentary, "Common Threads." For details on St. Pius events, call Pa'akaula at 255-4680.

Another Names Project quilt will be on display at Sacred Heart Church in Kaimuki.
