Singer Leo Kottke plans four concerts here

Leo Kottke, a singer-guitarist with a homey folk style, will make a four-concert, three-island tour in December, culminating with a performance Dec. 11 at the Hawai'i Theatre.

Kottke's appearances:

• Dec 7, 7:30 p.m. — Maui Arts & Cultural Center's Castle Theater. Tickets: $24, $18, $10. Call (808) 242-7469.

• Dec 8, time to be announced — Aloha Theatre, Kailua-Kona. Tickets: $25. Call (808) 322-2323.

• Dec. 11, 8 p.m. — Hawai'i Theatre, Honolulu. Tickets: $25. Call 528-0506.

The upcoming shows will be Kottke's first here in eight years.

A Windham Hill recording artist, Kottke performs solo, largely relying on the 12-string guitar that brought him initial success and fame on John Fahey's independent label, Takoma Records, in 1969.

Kottke since has recorded 24 albums and now is a regular guest on Garrison Keillor's "A Prairie Home Companion" radio show.

Besides his solo work, Kottke has performed and recorded with such industry favorites as Emmylou Harris, Rickie Lee Jones and Lyle Lovett.

He has been inducted into Guitar Player magazine's Hall of Fame.


Sheraton sets Christmas events

The Sheraton Waikiki Hotel will kick off its holiday festivities with a tree-lighting ceremony at 5 p.m. tomorrow in the hotel lobby. A Santa visit and music by the Honolulu Madrigal Quartet will be featured.

The St. John Vianney School Choir performs from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Dec. 11 in the lobby, which will be transformed into a Christmas garden complete with red, green and gold lights and Christmas trees contrasted by flowers from gardens throughout the Islands.

A "Twelve Days of Christmas" series, from 5 to 5:45 p.m., begins Dec. 13, with music each day.

CoCo Lee tops Big Wave concert

CoCo Lee, a Hong Kong-born, U.S.-reared superstar who performed the Oscar-nominated song, "A Love Before Time" from the hit film, "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," headlines the second annual Big Wave Honolulu concert at 7 p.m. Dec. 15 at the Waikiki Shell.

Lee has been a fixture on the Asian music scene, a U.S.-based performer with a burgeoning following in the Asian market. Her voice is heard in several soundtracks of Jackie Chan movies and also in the "Mulan" soundtrack for Asian audiences.

Tickets: $60 and $40 for reserved seats, $20 for general admission grass seats, on sale at hkchcc.org/Event.htm. Part of the proceeds will go to the University of Hawai'i Foundation and the Sept. 11 Disaster Fund. The performance is sponsored by the Hong Kong China Hawai'i Chamber of Commerce.
