Maui called 'StormReady'

WAILUKU, Maui — Maui County has been designated a "StormReady" community under a voluntary National Weather Service and Civil Defense program.

The preparedness program helps communities develop plans to handle severe weather threats from hurricanes, flash floods, high surf and other hazards.

Maui County is the first location in Hawai'i and the Pacific to be recognized under the program .

StormReady certificates were presented Thursday to Mayor James "Kimo" Apana, Maui County Civil Defense Administrator Kyle Watanabe and police Capt. Glenn Miyahira.
