Give gift to brighten child's day

Associated Press

People have rushed to donate money to help people affected by the Sept. 11 attacks and the ensuing economic slump. But organizers of the annual Toys for Tots campaign are reminding the community that donations of new and unwrapped toys can help, as well.

"This year, we anticipate an increase in the demand for toys in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, which resulted in the loss of thousands of jobs," said Staff Sgt. Ruben Villareal of the Marine Corps in Hawai'i, which is joining with local business and charities for the 54th national yearly toy drive. Social service agencies help distribute the toys to underprivileged, homeless, disabled children and families with foster children.

Toys for newborns to 17-year-olds may be dropped off through Dec. 16 at any Longs Drugs Store, Subway Sandwiches, Price Busters, Bank of Hawaii and Minit Stop, and the Hawaiian Isles Kona Coffee corporate office.

If your family wishes to apply to receive a toy, contact the nearest Salvation Army Corps Community Center or any social-service provider. For general information about the program, call 257-2531, ext. 233.
