For Better, For Worse
It's a small world — with a nice big beach

By Kathy Michiko Myers

Kathy Michiko Myers and Andrew David Myers are letter carriers who met on the beach.
Our story has a little zip to it! ZIP code, I mean.

My name is Kathy Michiko Myers, and I deliver mail in Wahiawa. My husband, Andrew Myers, is a letter carrier in 'Aiea.

Friends and family think we met through the post office because we both work there. Not true! Four years ago on a gorgeous summer day, I was swimming my usual laps at Sunset Beach (which is where I live) with my two dogs, Brutus, a 4-month-old black Lab pup, and Matie Boy, a poi dog.

Before I knew it, my dogs had scrambled over his torso, kicking sand in his face. I apologized and, while making small talk — What's your name? Where do you live? etc. — he said Wahiawa and Myers. Ting! I had delivered his mail on one of my routes! Small world, I thought.

At the time, Sunset Beach had no showers or public restrooms, so I offered the use of mine a few blocks away. Being a fellow letter carrier, I wanted to extend some kind of aloha. Years later, I found out he was thinking shower with me in my shower. I meant outside in the dog shower.

It was mango season, and Andrew asked me if I liked mangoes. "Yes! yes!" I replied. The very next day, he dropped off a bag for me at the Wahiawa post office. We became friends.

Well, two years later, through four boyfriends, bags and bags of mangoes, "accidental" meetings at the Mango Street Mall, on my mail route and at the dentist's office (he was sitting in the chair next to me), I fell in love with Andrew D. Myers.

On Sept. 8, 2001, we were wed in the Ni'ihau Room at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel. I'm truly blessed to know and have a wonderful husband.

The Myerses live in Hale'iwa.
