Maui man critical after accident

Advertiser Staff

A Maui man was in critical condition yesterday at Maui Memorial Medical Center after a two-car crash Saturday in Kihei.

Police said Douglas "Billy" Rothaus, 55, was injured about 4 p.m. on Haiku road near East Kuiaha Road, when his 1978 Dodge pickup, which was headed southeast, collided with a 1987 Ford van headed northwest on the same road.

Rothaus, who was not wearing a seat belt, received multiple skull and facial fractures and a broken hip, police said.

The 26-year-old driver of the van and her female passenger were wearing seat belts, police said. Neither woman was injured.

Maui police continued to investigate whether alcohol, speed or drug use were factors in the crash.
