Kahai LaCount, a 6-foot-2, 295-pound tackle/guard, was offered a scholarship by the Warriors on Sunday morning and accepted 24 hours later.
Kahai LaCount is the third Kailua lineman to commit verbally to UH.
LaCount said he was offered recruiting trips to Nebraska, Colorado, Arizona, Washington and Indiana, but had yet to receive scholarship offers from any of those schools. Not long after UH offered one, LaCount said he chose to accept.
"I thought about it all day (Sunday)," LaCount said. "I wanted to take the trips to see what was out there, but then I didn't feel like flying. I decided to stay home."
Kailua coach Darren Johnson said LaCount, who started the season at tackle but later moved to guard, can do 22 bench-press repetitions of 225 pounds and can run the 40-yard dash in 5.0 seconds. Johnson added LaCount has squatted 400 pounds.
"He's an extremely hard worker who sets high standards for himself," Johnson said. "He's a good student and a good listener. UH is not going to have any problems with him."
LaCount joins teammates Sam Satele and Marques Kaonohi as Kailua linemen who have committed to Hawai'i. All three, and other Surfriders, have been guests on the Warriors sidelines this season.
"I decided on my own," said LaCount, who plans to major in business. "This is good for my family. Most of my relatives live here, so now they can watch me play."
