Kamehameha duo shares Player of the Year honors

Advertiser Staff

Isaac Kneubuhl, left, and Rickey Estrada played big roles in Kamehameha's state championship season. Kneubuhl, a 6-foot-2 outside hitter, was the Warriors' main weapon as a hitter. Estrada, not very tall for an outside hitter at 5 feet 10, used his uncanny court awareness to find openings in opposing defenses.

Rickey Estrada and Isaac Kneubuhl played such huge roles in Kamehameha's undefeated (15-0) run through the Interscholastic League of Honolulu season, it was tough to choose which one was better.

So when it came time for ILH coaches to choose a Player of the Year, they chose both.

Estrada, a 5-foot-10 senior outside hitter, was not very tall for his position, but he played big. His leaping ability and court sense allowed him to find openings in opposing defenses, and his deft ball-handling made him like a second setter or defensive specialist.

Kneubuhl, a 6-2 junior outside hitter, often was the go-to guy in the Warriors' offense. His vertical leap and pinpoint hitting gave Kamehameha a reliable weapon whenever it needed a crucial sideout or point. Kneubuhl also was a strong server.

Teammate David Hoke, a 6-2 middle blocker, also was selected to the ILH all-star first team. They are joined by Iolani seniors Jonathan Grobe (6-4, outside hitter) and Tyler McCready (6-5, middle blocker), Hawai'i Baptist senior Matthew Bninski (6-0, outside hitter), Punahou senior Kupono Nuuhiwa (5-6, setter) and St. Louis junior Max DeWolf (6-5, opposite).

Iolani's Luis Ramirez was named Coach of the Year.

Iolani's Luis Ramirez, who guided the Raiders to their first state tournament appearance since 1992, was named Coach of the Year. Ramirez, in his first year as Iolani's coach, credited assistants Peter Greenhill and Jan Resuello with helping develop a Raiders team which lacked much volleyball experience.
