Miyashiro, Hardimon named Players of the Year

The O'ahu Interscholastic Association's East Division was a fountain of youth this girls volleyball season.
Even the Coach of the Year, Kalani's Tehani Miyashiro, is a 22-year-old in her first year as a head coach.
These youngsters, however, proved they belonged among the league's elite.
Hardimon, a 5-foot-8 junior outside hitter, was a team captain and helped lead the Menehune to a 6-4 record and into the OIA playoffs. She had 18 kills in a three-game victory over Kaimuki.
Miyashiro, a 5-7 outside hitter, showed unusual poise in leading the surprising Falcons to an unbeaten (10-0) run through the regular season. She had 14 kills and nine digs in the OIA championship match against Kahuku. Kalani lost, 15-12, 15-8.

Hardimon and Miyashiro are joined on the first team by Farrington juniors Janice Fonoti (5-11) and Paepaeteie Poasa (5-10), Moanalua junior Amy Kotani (5-2), Kahuku junior Michelle "Tuli" Peters (5-9) and Kalaheo junior Meghan Watson (5-7).
Tehani Miyashiro was named Coach of the Year.
Tehani Miyashiro, a former All-Western Athletic Conference defensive specialist at the University of Hawai'i, took the Kalani reins at the last minute and guided the young Falcons to within one victory of their first OIA title since 1972. That team was coached by current UH coach Dave Shoji.
This year's Falcons had only three seniors and no player taller than 5-10.
