SOFTBALL
Four sign with UH: The University of Hawai'i softball team received letters of intent from four players yesterday.
Signing were Stacey Ritter of the University of Technology-Sydney, Ashley Ruff of Kamehameha Schools, Ashley Power of Kealakehe High School and Hannah Butler of Rincon High in Tucson, Ariz.
Ritter, a 6-foot first baseman, captained the Australian 19-under team in early January.
Ruff, a 5-7 shortstop, was an Advertiser first-team all-state selection this past season.
"We're glad to keep her at home," UH coach Bob Coolen said in a statement. "She has very quick hands and feet (and) comes from one of the better local programs."
Powers, a 5-9 middle infielder, was her team's captain and MVP this past season. She was the 2000 Big Island Interscholastic Federation first-team shortstop.
Butler batted .419 this past season and was named to the all-Southern Arizona team for the third straight time.
"We feel that we needed to address size and speed for next year and we have done that with these recruits coming in," Coolen said.
BASKETBALL
New Jersey player signs: A 6-foot-6 high school swingman from New Jersey has signed to play for the University of Hawai'i at Hilo next season.
Nolan Hall, a senior at Southern Regional High School, averaged 22.6 points and 7.3 rebounds per game during his junior season.
"He has the capabilities of scoring from inside and out," UH-Hilo coach Jeff Law said in a press release. "He's a real strong freshman with good size and potential."
