Four-year-old "A.C." would like to be able to run with her friends. Born with a deformed right foot, she finds running and playing difficult.

It's possible the condition can be corrected, her parents said. But M.C. and L.B. have been unable to take their daughter from Makaha to Shriners Hospital for Children in Honolulu for treatment because their 18-year-old car broke down a year ago and they can't afford to fix it.

A.C. suffers from asthma so riding the bus is difficult for her.

M.C., 27, earns $460 per month as a stock clerk and the family receives an additional $300 in welfare assistance plus food stamps. L.B. stays at home caring for their daughter. It costs $3 a day for M.C. to ride the bus to work and back. There's not much left after paying $309 rent for a two-bedroom apartment.

The girl needs different size shoes because of her foot condition, which does not prevent her from walking. The family, however, cannot afford to buy two pairs at a time. So A.C. goes barefoot most of the time.

"We have enough food and a place to stay," M.C. said. "We thankful for that. But we got to take care of our daughter."

They need roundtrip transportation for A.C. to Shriners Hospital. When therapy begins, she may need to go twice a week or more. The family also needs a vacuum cleaner to keep their home dust free.

"It would be better to have a car," M.C. said. "But we just need to get her to treatment. I like see her run with her friends some day."
