USS Arizona attack relived in cyberspace

To coincide with its premiere of the documentary film "Pearl Harbor: Death of the Arizona," the Discovery Channel has loaded its Web site with informative, interactive goodies detailing the USS Arizona attack.

Most impressive are a couple of rarely seen 16mm film clips shot on the morning of Dec. 7, 1941, by Army doctor Capt. Eric Hakansson from the nearby hospital ship USS Solace. The film captures the moment the Arizona was first hit, along with footage of Japanese Zeros circling Pearl Harbor.

An animated clip from the documentary reconstructs the way experts believe this first 1,763-pound armor-piercing bomb violently tore through the forward half of the battleship, killing many of the 1,177 men on board. Check out the interactive features at discovery.com.

"Pearl Harbor: Death of the Arizona" airs tonight at 6 and 10, with a rebroadcast at 2 p.m. Sunday.

This bomb's for you, Osama bin Laden

Actor David Keith, who appears in the military thriller "Behind Enemy Lines," has signed an autograph he hopes will be delivered to Osama bin Laden. It's printed on the side of a 500-pound bomb carried by an American F/A-18 jet.

With patriotic fervor high, Keith's recent visit to the USS Carl Vinson in the Arabian Sea is one of many ways Hollywood is publicizing new movies while trying to boost troop morale overseas.

Keith, who filmed aboard the Vinson earlier this year when it was moored at San Diego, said the 3,000 troops he met in the Arabian Sea were just happy to hear from a civilian, since many have had little contact with the public since the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

MTV does the war: J-Lo and the troops

More proof that patriotism is now the province of the young: The United Service Organizations are getting the MTV treatment — the network is producing a holiday concert for troops featuring Jennifer Lopez, Kid Rock and Ja Rule.

The show will be taped at an overseas military base. MTV did not reveal the site or the date of the concert, citing security concerns.

"For the Troops: An MTV/USO Special" will air on New Year's Day, with MTV's "TRL" host Carson Daly. MTV News crews will follow the entertainers as they mingle with soldiers, and service men and women will be interviewed.
