Tip-offs
Surf-quirk rock with Man or Astro-Man?

Oddball surf rockers Man or Astro-Man? will be in Honolulu for a Sunday concert at Pink Cadillac.

Hailing '60s surf-rock legend Dick Dale as its closest influence, the mostly-instrumental band —whose concerts are littered with cheesy futuristic TV imagery and Cold War instructional videos — is reminiscent of a turn-of-the-millennium Devo.

Oh, and the entire band swears to have come from the future.

Scheduled local opening acts are Grapefruit and The Sticklers.

The concert, an all-ages show, begins at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10. For more information, call 255-7040 or 625-6279.

Howie Mandel's close-shave comedy

Howie Mandel, comedic star of TV, films and clubs, may appear here with a bald pate.

In a recent Razor magazine article, Mandel says he shaved his long sideburns too short — and then proceeded to go higher on the shorter one and then the other until he did his entire head.

That's the whimsy and kookiness of Mandel, who returns to Hawai'i for three concerts:

  • Dec. 27, 7:30 and 9:30 p.m., at the Westin Maui Hotel. Tickets: $27.50 (general admission), on sale Dec.14 at Ticket Plus locations and Maui Tacos.
  • Dec. 28, 7 p.m., in the Royal Hawaiian Hotel's Monarch Room. Tickets: $35 (reserved seating), on sale today at Ticket Plus outlets.

A Kaua'i date is still pending.

Mandel, a former talk show host and co-star on NBC's "St. Elsewhere," is heard on the syndicated "Bobby's World" animated series.

Reservations: 526-4400.
