Sing-out planned for 'Messiah'

Handel's "Messiah," a staple of the holiday repertoire, will be presented in a community sing-out at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 11 at St. Andrew's Cathedral.

The oratorio features soloists Jeanne DeCosta, Erna Stuckey, John Alexander, Philip Turley and Wayne DeMello, but audience members are also invited to participate.

The St. Andrew's Cathedral Choir will be featured.

Dr. Arlan Sunnarborg will be at the organ. The program is being conducted by John Alexander of Iolani School. Admission is free. Information: Alan Sunnarborg at 524-2822, ext. 223.


O'ahu soloists in 'Amahl' show

Five soloists from the Hawai'i Opera Theatre will be featured in the Kona Association for the Performing Arts' "Amahl and the Night Visitors," at 3 and 7:30 p.m. Dec.15 and 3 p.m. Dec. 16 at the Aloha Theatre in Kailua-Kona.

The soloists are tenor Julius Dae-Sung Ah, bass Quinn Kelsey, baritone Patrick McNichols, tenor James Price and mezzo-soprano Louise South. Two Honolulu Boy Choir youths, Keith Ordonez and Eddie Saito, both 12, will also be featured.

Jerry Tracy is directing, Ken Staton is conducting.

The evening also includes the world premiere of "Advenir," a work by Big Island composer Michael Springer.

Tickets: Matinees, $20 for adults and $10 for children; evening, $20 for all seats, at the box office or Mele Kai Music.

Last chance for 'Let's Dance'

The year's final "Let's Dance" event, set from 6 to 9 p.m. Dec. 16 at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, will be subtitled "Christmas Swing." The dance concert will feature the music of Frank Sinatra, with Willie Barton's Orchestra performing the big band sounds of Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Harry James and more.

Guest singers include Jan Brenner, George Church, Sonny Maguire and Al Waterson. Rene Mansho plays host to the event.
