Dead woman's identity sought

MAKENA, Maui — Police are trying to identify an elderly Caucasian woman whose body washed ashore Tuesday afternoon in Makena.

The woman, dressed in street clothes, was not carrying any identification but did have a hotel key card, said Lt. Michael Kaho-

'ohanohano of the Maui Police Department. Police did not receive any reports of a missing person and were trying to find out where the woman was staying.

The autopsy results were not available, but foul play is not suspected, he said. Kaho'ohanohano said the woman had head injuries consistent with a fall or being washed against the rocks.

Sexual assault of minor charged

HILO, Hawai'i — A 53-year-old Pepe'ekeo man was charged with five counts of sexually assaulting a minor after he violated a trespassing notice to stay away from the Connections New Century Public Charter School.

A preliminary hearing will be held today for John Philip Worman, who was arrested Wednesday. He remained in custody at the Hawai'i Community Correctional Center with bail set at $9,000.

He is charged with one count each of first- and fourth-degree sexual assault and three counts of third-degree sexual assault. Police say the actions occurred over the past three years.

Worman was seen loitering around the Big Island school Monday and was issued a trespass notice, said detective Randal Ishii of the Hawai'i County Police Department. He returned to the campus Wednesday and was arrested.

Waipouli woman hurt in propane fire

L?HU'E, Kaua'i — A Waipouli woman was injured Tuesday when leaking propane in her home ignited as she was leaving the house.

The victim was being treated at Wilcox Hospital. Her home on Kuhio Highway suffered an estimated $185,000 in fire damage.

Fire investigators said a propane container inside the home apparently leaked, and the gas was set off by a water heater. Neighbors reported the explosion at about 4:10 p.m.

Kauai man charged in attack at hotel

L?HU'E, Kaua'i — Police have charged a 60-year-old Kekaha man with last Friday's attack on a Kaua'i Marriott Resort housekeeper.

The woman said a man with a pocketknife attacked her as she cleaned a hotel room. She grabbed the weapon and kicked the man. The woman was cut, but the man fled.

Police said Larry Alexander was charged with second-degree assault after he went to police and confessed.
