Air Force Gen. Richard B. Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, last night spoke at a fund-raiser at Hickam Air Force Base and drew parallels between Dec. 7, 1941 and Sept. 11, 2001.
"I don't think America, in my opinion, has faced such a direct threat to our homeland and our way of life since that fateful day 60 years ago," he said. "And that's why, in my view, we've seen such galvanized support among the American people for our effort to eradicate terrorism. This audience in particular understands ... perhaps better than most, how all of that works.
"We entered World War II because of what happened right here."
Myers, the top military adviser to the president and a former Pacific Air Forces commander, spoke at a fund-raiser for the Military Aviation Museum of the Pacific, which is planned for Ford island.
About 300 people attended the $200 a plate dinner at the Hickam Officers Club.
The Museum Association is raising $250,000 to continue development and planning for the first museum in Hawai'i dedicated to the history of air power in the Pacific.
