Trim your tree Hawai'i-style

By Paula Rath

When Toni Normand of Mo'ili'ili goes shopping for made-in-Hawai'i ornaments to decorate her little palm tree, she won't have a hard time finding cute, creative and inexpensive ones.

At Mission Houses Museum, angels are the theme for 2001. Marie Kunimura fashioned an elegant angel from kapa, while Liz Napoleon employed white mesh for her ethereal angel, accessorized with a lei po'o and bouquet of dried flowers. Edna Loo's angel wears a mu'umu'u and a tiny shell lei.

Riches Kahala offers a Maui Muumuu doll wearing red-and-white palaka with blue feathers to round out the patriotic color scheme.

Proudly patriotic is the Omadt ornament made of red, white and blue fimo fashioned around a glass ball with flags and plumeria, available at Island Treasures Galleries in Hawai'i Kai and Kailua.

Also at Island Treasures are Sumo Santas by Pacific Ceramics on Maui and, for a giggle, geckos with candy canes. The best bargain we found is the little angel ornaments made by the folks at Lanakila Crafts. Wearing muslin dresses and mini-wood rose accessories, they are only $2.

A little red glittery i'iwi bird is a charming find at Cook's Discoveries and Hana Hou on the Big Island.

Native Books & Beautiful Things now has painted wood ornaments by Linda Gue that depict honu and plumeria.

From Hale Ku'ai Cooperative in Hau'ula come makini masks made of kamani nuts and hula implements by Hawaiian Hawaiian in Waimanalo.

At Nohea Galleries, protea are fashioned into lovely maidens with pretty painted faces and lei po'o in their hair.
