Art to Wear with Asian Flair

Hawai'i-born Stephanie Masae Kimura, a nationally recognized designer of wearable art, specializes in Asian-inspired designs and has just released a book titled "Art to Wear with Asian Flair." She visits Honolulu this week, bringing a trunk show of her designs called "Art to Wear" to Bernina of Hawaii.

Kimura, who grew up in Pearl City but lives in Florida, has created her own line of custom clothing and sewing patterns. Her clothing, a fusion of ancient craft and contemporary style, combines vintage Asian textiles with hand-dyed cloth and gossamer silks. Fabrics are pieced, embroidered and embellished with beaded tassels and braided loops.

On Friday and Saturday, 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., at Bernina of Hawaii, 320 Ward Ave., Kimura will present her work and teach classes in creating one-of-a-kind clothing using Asian motifs, simple sewing techniques and creative surface design.

For trunk show and class information, call 593-9150.
