WINDWARD

Kailua library to celebrate

A lion dance, entertainment and dignitaries will all be part of a renovation celebration at the Kailua public library from noon to 8 p.m. tomorrow at the state facility at 239 Kuulei Road.

Sponsored by the Friends of Kailua Library, the event marks the first anniversary of the library's renovation, said Alice Fink, with the Friends.


O'AHU

Construction to close lanes

One lane of Fort Weaver Road between Geiger Road and Laulaunui Street will be closed in either the northbound or southbound direction today through Friday. Northbound lanes will be closed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., while southbound lanes will be closed from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Following are closures on the H-1 Freeway corridor today through Friday:

  • Intermittent closures of the Pi'ikoi Street on-ramp to the freeway eastbound and one lane of the H-1 Punahou Street off-ramp from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
  • One lane of Wai'alae Avenue from Ekaha Avenue to 17th Avenue from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • One lane of the Wai'alae Outbound Front-age Road between 17th Avenue and Wai'alae Avenue overpass, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Lane closures on the Kahekili and Likelike highways are as follows:

  • Town-bound lanes of Kahekili between Kulukeoe Street and Likelike Highway today and tomorrow from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m.
  • Likelike between Kahekili and Nalanieha Street in both directions Wednesday and Thursday and Dec. 17 and 18 from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. The H-3 Freeway on-ramp from Likelike Highway will remain open.




HONOLULU

Teachers fear losing benefits

Charter school supporters and Republican legislators met yesterday on the lawn of the Department of Education to protest what they say is a department attempt to remove Lanikai and Wai'alae elementary school teachers from the DOE tenure system.

Lanikai teachers Donna Therrien, Alex Cyran, Alexis VanGorder and Hillary Radovich said they and other certified teachers could be forced to transfer out of the charter school system unless the DOE assures them their benefits are secure.

Education officials could not be reached for comment yesterday. A town hall meeting will address the issue at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Lanikai school.


Lions plan Manoa parade

The Waioli Lions Club, East Manoa Lions Club and Manoa Jaycees will present a Christmas parade in Manoa Valley on Saturday beginning at 6 p.m.

The parade will start at Noelani Elementary School and travel along East Manoa Road, up Lowrey Avenue and onto Manoa Road to the community's gym parking lot.


LEEWARD

Man killed, two hurt in crash

One man was killed and another seriously injured when a car hit their sedan, flipping it over on Farrington Highway yesterday morning.

The driver of the second car, a woman, also received serious injuries.

The collision occurred shortly before 7 a.m. about a mile wai'anae of Ali'inui Drive overpass.

The man killed was driving a maroon 1986 Toyota four-door sedan. The other car driven by the woman was a blue 2001 Chrysler four-door sedan.

The drivers were taken by helicopter to The Queen's Medical Center, where the man who was driving the Chrysler died at about 9:15 a.m. The woman driver of the Chrysler was listed in serious condition.

The passenger of the Toyota was taken to St. Francis Medical Center West, and transferred to Queen's, where his condition was serious.

Alcohol and speed of the car driven by the woman were factors in the collision, investigators said.


CENTRAL

Mililani atrium dedicated

An atrium display at the Mililani Public Library put together by community volunteers was dedicated in ceremonies last week.

Wendi Woodstrup, head librarian at the Mililani library, called the renovated courtyard a mix of "Japanese rock garden with Hawaiian plants."

Volunteers who helped build the the 25-foot-by 25-foot atrium included students of Mililani High School teachers Elaine Mahoney and Darrell Ota, Boy Scout Troop 264, the 25th Infantry Division (Light) and Takano Nakamura Landscaping. A $5,000 grant to build the project was made possible by the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation and Friends of the Library of Hawai'i.
