Fargo's wife sponsors ship

Sarah Fargo, the wife of U.S. Pacific Fleet Adm. Thomas Fargo, was expected to serve as a sponsor of the Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer Bulkeley at a commissioning ceremony Saturday in New York City.

The ship, which will be based in Norfolk, Va., is named in honor of Navy Vice Adm. John Duncan Bulkeley, who died in 1996. While in command of Motor Torpedo Boat Squadrons Three and Seven during the defense of the Philippines in World War II, Bulkeley evacuated Army Gen. Douglas MacArthur and President Quezon of the Philippines, and destroyed several Japanese planes and merchant ships, the Pentagon said.

Expected to serve as the ship's other sponsors were Bulkeley's three daughters, Regina Day, Joan Stade, and Diana Lindsay, and daughter-in-law Carol A. Bulkeley.
