More dengue found in Hana, Kane'ohe
Advertiser Staff
The Department of Health has identified four more cases of dengue fever, bringing the statewide total to 93.
There are three new cases in Hana, where 58 people have contracted the mosquito-borne disease. One new case has been added in Kane'ohe, which now has nine reported incidents.
The newly identified patients contracted the dengue virus in November, but only recently tested positive.
By island, the totals are: Maui, 68; O'ahu, 21; and Kaua'i, four.
Health officials remain cautiously optimistic the outbreak has been contained. The state Health Department is continuing its mosquito-control program, encouraging residents to remove standing water around their homes to get rid of mosquito breeding places.
The dengue virus is spread by the bite of Aedes mosquitoes; it cannot be passed from person to person. Victims typically suffer high fever, headache, muscle and joint pains, rash and pain behind the eyes.
