20 shops cited for sales to minors

HILO, Hawai'i — Big Island police reported yesterday that 20 of 56 stores targeted in an undercover sting operation were cited for selling cigarettes to minors.

Personnel from the University of Hawai'i's Cancer Research Center and the Juvenile Aid Sections of the Hawai'i County Police Department ran the undercover operation in October and November at stores in South Hilo, Puna, Ka'u and Kona.

Youths under the legal age of 18 were sent into the stores to try to buy cigarettes, said Lt. Henry Hickman. They were told to present valid ID if asked or tell the truth about their age, he said.

The minors were able to purchase tobacco at 20 of the businesses.

Store clerks who sold the cigarettes were issued a citation that requires a court appearance, Wickman said.
