Ishii, Hines, Ota qualify for Sony Open in Hawai'i

Professionals David Ishii and Tommy Hines, and amateur Jonathan Ota earned berths in the 2002 Sony Open in Hawai'i golf tournament after Aloha Section PGA qualifying yesterday at Waialae Country Club.

Ota shot the day's best round — a 1-under-par 71 — to beat a field of 12 amateurs.

Ishii, a Pearl Country Club pro, and Hines, an unattached pro, both shot 72 to lead the 51-player members-only professional field.

The 2002 Sony Open in Hawai'i will be played Jan. 10-13 at Waialae Country Club.

YOUTH SPORTS

Police help: The Hawai'i Police Athletic Federation is looking for youth athletic teams, clubs or organizations to sponsor.

The federation will assist qualified groups with activities, games, clinics, competitions, or funding for uniforms and equipment.

Interested groups can mail their request in writing and include descriptions of their group and type of assistance needed.

Track hours: The Pearl City Box Car Track is extending hours during the last two weeks of December — operating Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Weekend hours remain 1 p.m.-5 p.m.
