Christmas tree pickup offered

For a $5 donation, Kaiser High School's Cougar Band and Orchestra members will visit homes between Kuli'ou'ou and Kalama Valley and pick up Christmas trees for recycling as part of a fund-raising effort.

Trees must be tagged with a red ribbon, be cleared of flocking, tinsel or metal rods and be placed on the curb by 8 a.m. on Jan. 5. The date coincides with the city's Christmas tree recycling program at Kaiser, where the city will chip trees for free from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Trees should not be left at the school before that date.

Call the Cougar Band and Orchestra Boosters at 394-1218. Or mail a check with pickup information to the group, 511 Lunalilo Home Road, Honolulu, HI 96825. Orders will be confirmed by Jan. 3.

The Hawai'i Kai Public Library will celebrate the holiday season at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 20 at the library with Sen. Sam Slom reading a Christmas story, a visit from Santa Claus and cookies.

Children can make a spoon angel ornament to hang on a library Christmas tree.

For a language interpreter, call one week ahead at 397-5833.

Motorists will be able to pass through the area using an alternate route.

Tony Sang, an active member of the Waimanalo Hawaiian community, will be the grand marshal. He will be preceded by the Honolulu Police Department solo bikes, Kane'ohe Marine Corps Band and Royal Hawaiian Band.

Some 50 units will participate, including horseback riders, city lifeguards, canoe clubs and custom automobiles.

Debris cleared from fishpond

More than 16 truckloads of debris and trash were hauled out of Waikalua Loko Fishpond in Kane'ohe, as students across the island plan to use the wetland as a learning resource.

The Kane'ohe and Windward O'ahu Rotary clubs, along with the Waikalua Loko Fishpond Preservation Society and the city, removed trash using a front-end loader and one-ton trucks. Tires, metal, auto body parts, mangrove and plastic bottles were among the material removed, said Chuck Eakes, president of the Kane'ohe Rotary Club and treasurer of the preservation society.

Waikalua Loko is using part of a statewide federal grant to the Pacific American Foundation to develop curricula in Hawai'i's public schools using the ancient Hawaiian fishpond for science, social studies and language arts courses.

"This cleanup effort will help to provide additional opportunities for students, teachers and the community to participate in this innovative education program," said Eakes.
