Movie Openings

"AUDITION": Japanese with English subtitles. An art-house cult horror film from Japan. A shy middle-aged widower falls in love with a woman who has a deadly past and present. Opens tomorrow at Restaurant Row Theatres. Not rated.

"GRATEFUL DAWG": Documentary about the last days of Grateful Dead lead singer Jerry Garcia and the unique musical friendship of Garcia and mandolin player David Grisman. Opens tomorrow at Varsity Twin. (PG-13).

"NOT ANOTHER TEEN MOVIE": A satire that assembles the cliches, obligatory scenes and standard characters from three recent subgenres of the teen movie (prom, cheerleader and tasteless sex). Opens tomorrow at Keolu Center Cinemas, Windward Stadium 10, Kahala 8-Plex, Pearl Highlands 12, Ko'olau 10-Plex, Pearlridge 16-Plex, Dole Cannery 18-Plex, Mililani 14-Plex, Kapolei 16-Plex, Ward 16-Plex, Prince Kuhio Stadium Cinemas (Big Island), Ka'ahumanu 6-Plex (Maui) and Lahaina Cinemas (Maui). "VANILLA SKY": Tom Cruise stars as a Manhattan publishing exec who has what he thinks is a casual affair with Cameron Diaz. He falls in love with Penelope Cruz, to Diaz's intense anger, and that triggers basic changes in his life — so basic, the very premise of the movie itself is called into question. Puzzles within puzzles within puzzles, in a film you might want to sit through twice, just to be sure you have everything straight.
