Man kidnapped by joyriding robbers

Advertiser Staff

A 21-year-old man, robbed of some jewelry, was held against his will for 11 hours Tuesday and taken on a drive around the island before his kidnappers were arrested.

Kidnapping and second-degree robbery charges are pending against four men, two age 19, one 20 and one 23.

The victim told police his ordeal began about 3:30 a.m. when he dropped off a friend at his Wai'anae home. There he was approached by the suspects. One demanded the victim's chains and rings, then punched him in the face and took them.

The suspects drove the man around the island and, on a stop at the Hawai'i Kai Foodland, the captive asked to use the bathroom. He used a store phone to call a friend, who alerted police.

An all-points bulletin led patrol officers to the car, found to be a stolen vehicle, at the intersection of Kalaniana'ole Highway and 'Ainakoa Street, where the four were arrested.
