Kalaheo student arrested after fight

One student was injured and another arrested after a fight between two boys at Kalaheo High School before lunch yesterday.

The injured student was taken to Castle Medical Center, where he was treated and released. The boy hit his head on a step when he fell back and was conscious when he was taken to the hospital.

The school enforced a lock-down after the fight, confining students to their rooms and locking the doors. The procedure is normal under the circumstances, school Principal James Schlosser said, adding that it is a safety precaution.

The school is investigating the possibility of a third student, a ninth-grader, being involved as an instigator.

The arrested student, 15, was booked for assault in the third degree, police said.

Man gets probation in death of infant

A 29-year-old man who pleaded no contest to manslaughter in connection with the death of his 4-month-old son in May 2000 was sentenced yesterday by Circuit Judge Richard Perkins to 10 years probation.

Robert Coy II had originally been charged with second-degree murder after medical authorities told police that the infant had injuries consistent with shaken baby syndrome.

Coy told police that his son was injured when he fell from a bed. But a police search of Coy's home showed the bed was about two feet from the floor, which was covered by a well-padded carpet.
