Holidays full of potential for injuries

The holiday season ushers in not only more celebrating, but more potential for home injuries. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 8,700 people each year are treated in the emergency room for injuries directly related to the holidays, most of them preventable. "Around the holidays, many people let their guard down when, in fact, they should be even more cautious," warns David Oliver, president of the Lowe's Home Safety Council.
There are increases in choking cases; poisoning of children and animals who eat mistletoe and other decorative foliage; and falling injuries caused by climbing on tables, stools and chairs to hang decorations. The liquid in the bubbling variety of lights can cause delayed carbon monoxide poisoning. Families expecting small children or seniors as guests should also check for exposed outlet plugs, unlocked cabinets and tripping and choking hazards, as well as install handrails on all staircases.
