Driver, 18, killed as truck overturns

An 18-year-old driver was killed today when his pickup overturned in Makawao, Maui.

The accident occurred at 4:03 a.m., in the Pukalani-bound lanes of Makawao Avenue. Cody-Jo Kailiehu of Makawao, driving a gold Ford Ranger pickup, lost control of the truck in a bend, collided with a concrete barrier, crossed the center line and overturned.

The driver was trapped in the truck and pronounced dead at Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Kailiehu was not wearing a seat belt. Speed appears to have been a factor in the case.

Officer knocks down man waving hammer

A hammer-wielding man was knocked down yesterday outside the Ala Moana Center food court after a police officer fired rounds of "bean bag" ammunition.

Shopping center security guards and police confronted the man, 37, who was waving a hammer.

After guards and police tried to convince him to put down the hammer, the Lunalilo Street resident stepped toward the officer, who fired the nonlethal weapon. The incident is being investigated.

Two masked men rob hotel cashier

A pair of armed, masked robbers today held up a cashier at the Hawaiiana Hotel, 260 Beach Walk.

At 3:25 a.m., two men jumped over the counter in the lobby of the hotel and pointed handguns at the employee, demanding money.

After taking an undisclosed amount of cash, the robbers fled in a dark-colored vehicle.

One man was described as 6 feet 1, 195 pounds, with a thin build, wearing a green ski mask and dark clothes. The second also was wearing dark clothes, as well as a dark ski mask; he was about 5 feet 10, 180 pounds, with a thin build.

Teen held in alleged theft of store's shirt

A 19-year-old man was arrested last night on suspicion of trying to steal a shirt from the Ross Store on the Fort Street Mall, and then assaulting the security guard who stopped him.

Police, called to the scene at about 7:40 p.m., are classifying the case as a second-degree robbery.

The suspect was trying to leave the store without paying when the guard stopped him. He kicked the guard and tried to flee but was caught and later arrested by police.

Armed robbers make off with cash

Two masked robbers held up the Nanakuli 7-Eleven Store at 12:45 a.m. today.

The female cashier heard the door chime sound, looked up and saw two people she believed were men, both wearing masks. One had a gun and demanded money.

They took an undisclosed amount and fled.

Attempted murder charges probed

Police are investigating attempted murder charges against a 25-year-old Makiki man who pushed his girlfriend against the fourth-floor railing of their apartment building.

The man was arrested yesterday for a Tuesday incident that started with a fight in the apartment, 1315 Wilder Ave. The woman, 24, left the apartment. The suspect caught up with her in the walkway, tackling her and pushing her against the railing, where she fell.

The suspect picked her up and pressed her again against the railing, letting go only when a passerby appeared, police said.

Man held in attack on ex-girlfriend

A 33-year-old man was arrested yesterday on suspicion of breaking into his ex-girlfriend's home, assaulting her and taking a car from the Kapolei household.

Police said the suspect came to 92-2037 Kekuilani Loop at about 8:10 a.m. and forced his way into the home, where his ex-girlfriend, 31, lived. He assaulted her, then grabbed the keys to a car owned by her current boyfriend's mother.

The man attempted to drive off, and then assaulted the woman again when she opened the door in an attempt to stop his escape. Police later located the suspect and arrested him for burglary, car theft and abuse of a household member.

Ex-officer avoids jail in overtime case

A former police officer who pleaded no contest in September to taking more than $13,000 for work he didn't do was placed yesterday on conditions similar to probation for five years.

If he stays out of trouble during that time, Felito Laboy will avoid having a criminal record.

Judge Richard Perkins also sentenced Laboy to 300 hours of community service.

Deputy Attorney General Christopher Young said at an earlier court hearing that discrepancies in Laboy's pay were uncovered when the state Department of Transportation did an audit into high police overtime pay at the Honolulu airport during 1999.

Young said Laboy was paid for 15 days between Feb. 16 and July 28, 1999, when he did not report for work, and was paid for 354 hours of work on another 89 occasions although he did not work a full shift. Laboy was in charge of a detail at the airport. Young said Laboy, 57, had repaid the state $13,509.
