UH to honor Japan studies scholar

The University of Hawai'i will confer an honorary doctorate of humane letters on Columbia University professor emeritus Edward Seidensticker at commencement ceremonies at the Stan Sheriff Center in Manoa, beginning at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Seidensticker is credited with contributing to the revival of interest in Japanese literature after World War II. He translated the classic "Tale of Genji," the novels of Nobel Prize winner Kawabata Yasunari and author Mishima Yukio.

He has served on numerous graduate student committees and on the Japan Studies Endowment Committee and donates to the annual Edward Seidensticker Award in Japanese Studies.

Matching donor program continues

The McInerny Foundation will continue its McInerny Match program with the University of Hawai'i for the fourth straight year.

The foundation will match donations from first-time alumni, up to $100 per match and a total of $50,000. More than 7,000 first-time donors participated in the first three years of the program.
