'Store' holds sale for kids

The last in a series of "Good Neighbor Stores" will operate from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Dec. 23, at the

Honolulu Community Action Program Building, 85-555 Farrington Highway in Wai'anae, at the entrance of the Wai'anae Boat Harbor.

The purpose of the stores, which began in Makiki on Dec. 10, is to give underprivileged, disadvantaged and abused children an opportunity to enjoy "gift of giving."

Volunteer Santa helpers will escort children to a selection of gifts, where the child will pick out a present for a parent or guardian. Gift price: one penny, which will be provided if necessary (limited to one designated child per family).

A children's entertainment program, plus a movie, "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas," will begin after the store closes. For more information, call 696-1737.

Hunting fees may go up

The state has proposed increasing hunting fees next year and in 2003 to raise money needed for the public hunting program.

Basic hunting fees for Hawai'i residents would increase from $15 to $20. Participating in special hunts, such as for Axis deer on Lana'i, would cost an additional $15.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources also is proposing new application fees and tag fees for some hunts, and an increase in wildlife stamp costs.

Comments on the proposal, due Jan. 28, should be submitted to the department's forestry and wildlife division, 1151 Punchbowl St., Room 325, Honolulu, HI 96813. For information, call 587-0166.

Waipahu to hold parade

The Waipahu Christmas parade — one of the longer parades on O'ahu with a route about 10 miles long — will take place at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Parade chairwoman Annette Yamaguchi said the parade, which begins and ends at the Waipahu sugar mill smokestack, will have over 50 vehicles.

"It was be a totally motorized parade with 20 organizations participating," Yamaguchi said. "Even the marching bands will be riding."

The parade will run along all of Waipahu Street, portions of Honowai Street and Farrington Highway, and up Lumiaina Street in Waikele.

Candy will be passed out to children during the parade.
