Advertiser buys print-facility land

The Honolulu Advertiser and the Campbell Estate today closed the deal on the newspaper's acquisition of 11.6 acres in Kapolei for a new $81 million printing and distribution center.
The terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
The Advertiser announced earlier this year that it would build a new printing facility in Kapolei to replace its existing production plant in downtown Honolulu. News, advertising and business operations will remain at 605 Kap'iolani Blvd.
"The land acquisition is important in that it enables The Advertiser to go forward with a major $81 million construction project in West O'ahu," said Michael Fisch, president and publisher of the newspaper. "By moving our printing and distribution hub to Kapolei, we will better serve all of O'ahu far into the future."
The newspaper plans to break ground on the project in late spring and start construction next August. AM Partners of Honolulu and Eurographics Architects and Engineers of Augsberg, Germany, are collaborating on the design of the facility.
The 147,000-square-foot facility, at the intersection of Kapolei Parkway and Kalaeloa Boulevard, is scheduled to open in summer 2004. The new plant will use state-of-the-art color offset printing technology.
Andy Friedlander and Doug Pothul of Colliers Monroe Friedlander served as the sole brokers of the deal.
