Tonight's Must-See

"Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry Jam," midnight, HBO. Whether the world notices them or not, there are some talented poets out there. MTV and Bill Moyers have already proven that. Now producer Simmons and director Stan Lathan prove it again. Tonight's poets are young. Most bring the rhythms and rage of the city, but one (rock star Jewel) is a country kid who offers a gentle tribute to her horse. One guy celebrates the giddiness of total love. Two women offer painful poems about sexual degradation.

"A Home For the Holidays," 7 p.m., CBS. This hour flows past us on waves of good intentions. The best moments are portraits of three families that adopted children. Quick and slick, each segment leaves too many questions, but engages our emotions. There are also songs that sometimes offer vocal gymnastics instead of melody. Still, there are fine moments from Enrique Iglesias and from Mariah Carey, plus a strong duet from Charlotte Church and Josh Groban.

Of local interest

"University of Hawai'i Rainbow Classic Basketball," KFVE. Second-round play begins tonight with games at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Of note

"Stars on Ice," 7 p.m., NBC. The touring skating show pauses for a TV special. Includes Tara Lipinski, Ilia Kulik, Kristi Yamaguchi and Katarina Witt.

"The Tick," 7:30 p.m., FOX. Discrimination among heroes? Captain Liberty, played by the terrific Liz Vassey, sues the all-male Legion of Superheroes.

"12 Tiny Christmas Tales," 7:30 p.m., Cartoon Network. Bill Plympton is a wonderfully eccentric cartoonist who includes an offbeat story in his annual Christmas cards. A friend persuaded him to turn them into this half-hour. The result is charming and fun.

"Challenge America with Erin Brockovich: The Miracle in Manhattan," 9 p.m., ABC. After successfully battling California power companies (and being portrayed by Julia Roberts), Brockovich is working on TV shows. This one gives her 10 days to complete a humanitarian mission in New York.
