80-year-old driver in critical condition
An 80-year-old man was critically injured yesterday when he lost control of his car and it struck a wall in Kaimuki.
Police said the man, a 19th Avenue resident, had taken the 6th Avenue cutoff from the H-1 Freeway when he hit the gas pedal instead of the brake. The man's 1999 Toyota went across 6th Avenue and hit a concrete wall at about 8:45 a.m.
He was taken to The Queen's Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition last night.
Woman hit by car in Waipahu
A woman was struck by a car and critically injured last night in Waipahu.
Details were not available, but police said the woman was struck at about 6:55 p.m. at Farrington Highway near Kahuali'i Street. She was taken to The Queen's Medical Center, where she was in critical condition last night.
Maui teen dies as truck overturns
An 18-year-old driver was killed yesterday when his pickup overturned in Makawao, Maui.
The accident occurred at 4:03 a.m. in the Pukalani-bound lanes of Makawao Avenue.
Cody-Jo Kailiehu of Makawao driving a gold Ford Ranger pickup, lost control of the truck in a bend. The vehicle collided with a concrete barrier, crossed the center line and overturned.
He was pronounced dead at Maui Memorial Medical Center.
Kailiehu was not wearing a seat belt. Speed appears to have been a factor, police said.
New trial ordered in death of baby
The Hawai'i Supreme Court yesterday ordered a new trial for a Salt Lake woman found guilty in February 2000 of murdering a 6-month-old baby she was baby-sitting at her home.
In a unanimous opinion, the five high court justices found that the jury was given improper instructions after seeking clarification of a legal point during its deliberations.
Earlily Aganon, now 32, was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after being convicted of second-degree murder for the death of Karie Canencia in October 1997.
Aganon was ordered to serve at least 15 years before being considered for parole
The baby died from a blow to the head, according to the autopsy.
Aganon denied that she had injured the child, and said the infant developed breathing problems while she was sleeping.
Two masked men rob hotel cashier
A pair of armed, masked robbers yesterday held up a cashier at the Hawaiiana Hotel, 260 Beach Walk.
At 3:25 a.m., two men jumped over the counter in the lobby of the hotel and pointed handguns at the employee, demanding money.
After taking an undisclosed amount of cash, the robbers fled in a dark-colored vehicle.
One man was described as 6 feet 1, 195 pounds, with a thin build, wearing a green ski mask and dark clothes. The second also was wearing dark clothes, as well as a dark ski mask; he was about 5 feet 10, 180 pounds, with a thin build.
Armed robbers make off with cash
Two masked robbers held up the Nanakuli 7-Eleven Store at 12:45 a.m. yesterday.
The female cashier heard the door chime sound, looked up and saw two people she believed were men, both wearing masks. One had a gun and demanded money.
They took an undisclosed amount and fled.
Attempted murder charges probed
Police are investigating attempted murder charges against a 25-year-old Makiki man who pushed his girlfriend against the fourth-floor railing of their apartment building.
The man was arrested Wednesday after a Tuesday fight in the apartment at 1315 Wilder Ave.
The woman, 24, left the apartment. The suspect caught up with her in the walkway, tackling her and pushing her against the railing, where she fell.
The suspect picked her up and pressed her again against the railing, letting go only when a passerby appeared, police said.
