Holiday hit will be played for 2 hours

Advertiser Staff

From the scores of versions available, about three dozen renderings of "Silent Night," the Austrian Christmas song written in 1818 and the most popular carol in the world, will be aired during a two-hour "Silent Night" radio show, from 2 to 4 p.m. today on KIPO 89.3 FM and KIFO 1230 AM.

Hosts Keith and Carmen Haugen are devoting their weekly Hawai'i Public Radio show to holiday music, with the spotlight on "Silent Night" and its multitude of renderings in a variety of languages.

Among the versions to be heard are a German choir's original version ("Stille Nacht") to instrumentals by steel guitarist Jerry Byrd and pan flutist Zamfir. Even the Three Tenors — Pacido Domingo, Jose Carreras and Luciano Pavorotti — have sung the tune. Hawaiian spin-offs by The Brothers Cazimero, Genoa Keawe, Alfred Apaka, Leo Nahenahe Singers and The Surfers will be featured.
