LEEWARD

Board seeks candidates

The Makakilo/Kapolei/Honokai Hale Neighborhood Board is seeking candidates for a vacant board seat.

Neighborhood board member Steve Loring said Thursday that he is resigning because he is moving from the area.

Candidates must live in the area and be at least 18 years old. They are asked to attend the next board meeting, Jan. 30 at the Campbell Building's Laulima Room, 1001 Kamokila Blvd.

The board position runs until May 2003.

WINDWARD

Parade to air on 'Olelo

The Waimanalo Christmas Parade will air on 'Olelo this month beginning at 2 p.m. today on Channel 55.

Sponsored by the Waimanalo Construction Coalition, the event was the biggest parade in the community, attracting participants from all over O'ahu.

"The coalition wants to thank all participants and people who supported the event with donations," said Patty Teruya, of the parade committee.

Scheduled air dates are 3:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. tomorrow on Channel 53, and 1 p.m. Saturday on Channel 53. Other air times have yet to be scheduled. Check your television listing for more information.


HONOLULU

BOE chairman, leaders named

Herbert Watanabe has been re-elected to a one-year term as chairman of the state Board of Education.

Picked as first vice chair was Donna Ikeda, while Karen Knudsen was selected as second vice chair. As chairman, Watanabe serves as a nonvoting member of all standing committees.

The board also named leaders of the committees. They are: Denise Matsumoto, regular education; Meyer Ueoka, special programs; Keith Sakata, support services; Knudsen, student services; Winston Sakurai, public libraries; Sherwood Hara, adult education; Ikeda, charter schools; and Sakurai and Shannon Ajifu, collective bargaining.

The board also selected Ikeda to head the ad hoc committee on superintendent/state librarian evaluation.
