Beached whale euthanized

A pygmy sperm whale that beached itself at Maui's Ma'alaea Beach has been euthanized.

Pacific Whale Foundation president Greg Kaufman said the adult female whale came ashore around 3 p.m. Friday near foundation headquarters. After a veterinarian administered steroids, it headed slightly out to sea and then turned back into a rocky area.

Maui veterinarian Greg Massey sedated the whale, which was taken to the Maui Ocean Center for overnight observation. Early Saturday morning it was struggling to breathe, and Massey made the decision to euthanize it.
