Beached whale euthanized

A pygmy sperm whale that beached itself at Maui's Ma'alaea Beach has been euthanized.

Pacific Whale Foundation president Greg Kaufman said the adult female whale came ashore around 3 p.m. Friday near foundation headquarters. After a veterinarian administered steroids, it headed slightly out to sea and then turned back into a rocky area.

Maui veterinarian Greg Massey sedated the whale, which was taken to the Maui Ocean Center for overnight observation. Early Saturday morning it was struggling to breathe, and Massey made the decision to euthanize it.

WAIHE'E, Maui — Developer Everett Dowling is donating $35,000 worth of Apple computers, printers and wireless Internet service for students at Waihe'e Elementary School.

Dowling's Wailuku-based company built the second phase of Waiehu Kou II, a Department of Hawaiian Home Lands housing project that is home to many of Waihe'e School's 880 students.

A presentation acknowledging the donation was held Dec. 19 at the school, with Dowling and Waihe'e Principal Larry Joyo.
