Fire dampens Wai'anae party

A fire at a Wai'anae home last night dampened but did not completely extinguish the Christmas Eve festivities of its residents.
A party was being prepared in the garage at the Moelima Street home just after 5:30 p.m. The residents heard glass breaking and discovered the top floor of their two-story home on fire, said fire department spokesman Capt. Kenison Tejada.
They tried with a neighbor to put out the blaze with a garden hose before firefighters arrived.
No one was injured in the fire, estimated to have caused $60,000 damage. Tejada said heavy damage was limited to the second floor, which was being used mainly as storage.
The three residents were able to pull their gifts from the house and moved their tables from the garage onto the sidewalk, where they continued their party, although Tejada said it was "somewhat subdued."
